Virginia Shuman Young, First Woman Mayor

The daughter of the pioneer Fort Lauderdale families Shuman and TenBrook, Virginia Young attended Southside Elementary and Fort Lauderdale Central High School. Her first job was as the Fort Lauderdale correspondent for the Miami Daily News. In 1953, while a school bus driver, Young was elected to the Broward County Board of Public Instruction. She was instrumental in merging the board with the Broward County School Board in 1957 and served as the first woman chairman in 1961. Her husband, George, was in the construction business, and Virginia was a co-owner until 1977. Young was elected to the city commission in 1971 and was appointed as the first (and only) woman mayor in 1973. She continued to serve on the city commission until 1985, appointed mayor again in 1981. While on the city commission, Young recruited women to serve on city advisory board. In 1975, she wrote the history book Mangrove Roots of Fort Lauderdale. Young became the first woman director of the Fort Lauderdale Landmark Bank in 1974, was the first woman elected president of the Florida League of Cities in 1977, and was the first woman to serve on the Downtown Development Authority in 1986. She received the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1985 and was further honored with a city park and elementary school named after her.
